Creating a Community
Creating a Community
Starting a community on Community means shaping your own space for conversation, creativity, and connection. Whether you're passionate about a niche topic or building a broad network of people with shared interests, communities give you the tools to gather others around what matters most to you.
Creating one is straightforward and begins right from your Community homepage.
Step 1: Begin Creation
To start your community:
Navigate to the Community site
In the left sidebar, scroll to the "My Communities" section
Click the "+ Create Community" button at the bottom
This will open the community creation form, where you’ll define what your space is all about.
Step 2: Add Key Details
You’ll be asked to fill in:
Community Name – The title that will appear at the top of your community page
Username (Handle) – A unique identifier used in the URL (e.g., fun.community/c/yourcommunity)
Description – A brief summary of your community’s purpose and content
Privacy Setting:
Public – Anyone can view and join
Private – Only invited members can access
Tags & Keywords – These help categorize your community and improve discoverability through interests, explore, and keyword search
Step 3: Upload Avatar and Banner
To complete setup, you must add:
A community avatar – This represents your community in feeds and previews
A banner image – Displayed across the top of your community page and used in discovery
Once you’ve finished, click Create and your community will go live.
What Happens Next?
You’ll be set as the community’s first moderator and can begin customizing the space right away — by posting, inviting members, assigning moderators, and setting up features like topics, chatrooms, and flair. You can always return to the Communities section in your Control Panel to manage or edit your community over time.
